Seventeen Seventy-Four

IBA City from 2008

The roads known as the “Kolonistenstraßen“ were built in Schönebeck in accordance with an urban development plan of 1774. These roads connect the districts of Frohse and Bad Salzelmen with the old town, shaping a triangle that informs the town’s fundamental structure. Bad Salzelmen is an established spa town and Frohse profits from water tourism. The old town is to become a residential area, where the service industry will also settle. Derelict sites in the city centre and disused allotments will be redesigned as public green spaces, reflecting former industrial sites returned to nature. Amenities in general will therefore be improved and building activity in the centre stimulated. The historic character of the “Kolonistenstraßen“ triangle will regain its distinction, catering for a recognisable, coherent townscape.
