Naumburg (Saale)

City Formation – Citizenry and Building Culture

Luftbild-Naumburg-S_LO_Michael-Kranz.jpg

IBA City from 2008

The active engagement of Naumburg’s residents has substantially contributed to the restoration of more than 60 per cent of its formerly crumbling architectural legacy. The municipality seeks to strengthen the engagement by improving available learning opportunities on building culture. Links between relevant institutions will be forged and improved, coordination on courses improved to suit demand. A new Centre for Architecture and the Environment should provide the focus for these activities, with varied learning programmes on urban regeneration, design, and ecology to be established in a newly reconstructed Baroque townhouse. Programmes will be aimed primarily at children and a younger public, in order to foster their identification with their city. This would generate continued mutual engagement: the city educates its citizens, while residents create their city.
