Magdeburg

Living alongside and with the Elbe

IBA City from 2003

Magdeburg is reclaiming the Elbe as a cultural and natural space, upgrading its urban environment with a series of projects, which are adjusted to accommodate the demographic and economic transformation. In the south, under the motto “less city – more landscape“, the renaturation of derelict heavy industry sites on the banks of the Elbe is a priority: new sport and recreational facilities and a cycle path reintegrate the river as a component of city life. In the Domfelsen area in the city centre, the steps leading to the river, the City Gallery and the bastion Cleve offer new, attractive public spaces beside the river. In the north, “more city” – a more densely built-up area – is called for. The former trading port is being developed as a location for technology-driven firms, near the university and the Max-Planck and Frauenhofer Institutes.
