Central Town in a Rural Region

IBA City from 2004

Stendal is the centre of the traditionally sparsely populated Altmark region. Since 1989, the region has continued to steadily lose inhabitants. Therefore, the provision of public services has to be reorganised. A triangle of towns was set up for the purpose. Stendal will become its administrative focus, providing culture, education, and social services. Tangermuende is to become a tourist resort and Angermuende’s attraction as an industrial location is to be enhanced. A three-zone model will regulate building in theses towns. City centres are to be reinforced, urban sprawl stabilized at current levels, and the peripheries’ attractiveness for recreation strengthened. The model is to be implemented primarily with the help of financial incentives. The closer you live towards the centre, the smaller the charges for fresh and wastewater.
