New Milieus – New Opportunities

Luftbild-Merseburg_LO_Michael-Kranz.jpg

IBA City from 2004

The blue-collar town for the chemicals industry of yesteryear is to become a city with a diverse mix of demographic groups. Situated between Halle and Leipzig, Merseburg aims to promote itself as a cathedral and university city, opening its gates to the creative and experimental milieus, thus keeping young people in the city and increasing its appeal to students, migrants and artists. The foundation of the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences in 1992, the opening of the European Romanesque Centre (ERZ) in 2008, and the planned redevelopment of the “Tiefer Keller“ district as an artists’ quarter go hand in hand with the structural improvement of castle hill and the cathedral and palace ensemble. To this end, the city’s historic buildings and cellars will be renovated and given new usages, allowing educational institutions, media enterprises and art institutions to settle.
