IBA Book 9: Potentials

February 2009

The volume “Potentials” in the series “The Other Cities” delivers a first outlook on the issue of sustainable perspectives: How can the stimuli generated by the International Building Exhibition be pursued? It introduces a spectrum of options, which range from new perspectives on the city and landscape to spatial planning, potentials in education and inter-religiousness.

An introduction describes the factors in favour of the successful development profiles in the nineteen IBA towns and cities, points out their future capacities for innovation, and closes with a number of explanatory case studies. In Lutherstadt Eisleben, for instance, the possible role of ecumenical Christianity in the urban development processes is highlighted. Lutherstadt Wittenberg shows how education can play a role in an extra-mural context. The formerly highly industrialised Bitterfeld-Wolfen region can generate considerable potentials for further development, above all else from its post-industrial landscape.

The case studies are followed by progress reports from the nineteen IBA towns and cities. Numerous interviews with protagonists on site show the diverse experiences of the “Other Cities” with the IBA Urban Redevelopment 2010, as a laboratory for experimental design and urban development.
